What is the meaning of life? (It’s not 42)
It’s actually fairly simple when you break it down.
In the grand, cosmic scale of the universe, human life is meaningless. We are a tiny blip in time, occupying a miniscule speck of a planet in space.
So what’s the point of us as an individual human even existing? The point is that there is no point, and so all that’s left is for the human being to experience their human life.
The pointless point is to live the human experience of life. During our life as a human there’s no bigger meaning than to experience a rich human life. Here’s why.
But what about our goals, what about our vision, what about our purpose? Well, why do we create them in the first place?
Imagine yourself as a new born baby that’s been dropped into this world in this instant (And let’s just ignore the 9 months in the womb). You have absolutely no past, no experiences, no identity, no nothing - except awareness and an experience of the present moment.
Then over time things happen, those things begin to form your past, and from those past experiences you begin to build your construct of self, and your construct of how you relate to the world you life in. And from that we start to create what we like and dislike, can and can’t do, want or don’t want and so on.

SO WHAT DOES THIS "MEAN"?
SO WHAT DOES THIS "MEAN"?
It means any desire that we have… Money, travel, freedom etc… Can only exist from within our construct of self that we’ve created from our past.
With no past, there would be no self, and there could not be a future vision of what we want either - because that’s based on our past.
So therefore meaning, purpose… an idea that we’re here to do something bigger than us in our future… that concept can only exist within our construct of self.
But then without desire, goals, vision... wouldn’t we all just be ever-present, spiritually enlightened Himalayan Goat Farmers living off the land never wanting for anything?
If we were purely an ever-present awareness, theoretically yes.
Except as human beings, part of being human is to have a construct of self that we in some form identify with. That’s mostly how we interact with and connect with other humans. That’s part of the human experience.
For a lot of us our construct of self is subconscious, and we don’t realise why we do what we do, or why we are who we think we are (Which of course is entirely made up). Over time we can bring more conscious awareness around our self though.
So if we know that there is no meaning in anything, in the grand cosmic scale…

WHY EVEN BOTHER SETTING GOALS?
WHY EVEN BOTHER SETTING GOALS?
Because as a human being, there are certain things that enrich the human experience. We feel a certain way when we’re being a certain way. We feel a certain way when we’re doing certain things.
And our life is all about how we feel while we’re living it. Given that there’s no meaning, wouldn’t life be a total waste if we didn’t enjoy it, because we were too busy stuck in our heads pursuing something imaginary instead of just experiencing it? We mostly pursue everything that we pursue based on how we think we’re going to feel when we get there, right?
We want more money because we tell ourselves we’ll feel more secure, more relaxed, more free, we can do more things and have more things that will make us feel good.
We wouldn’t pursue things such as money if we thought that when we got it we’d feel terrible, would we?
The human experience is in the “feeling”. Do you feel good working 70 hours a week in an unfulfilling job to pay the bills because you’re convincing yourself that you have no choice because it would “mean” too much if you quit?
Or would you feel great working on building a business that gives back to others and makes the world a better place and enriches the lives of others too? (Even though you know that it doesn’t mean anything in the cosmic scale of the universe of course...)

SO SHOULD I "FIND MY PURPOSE"?
SO SHOULD I "FIND MY PURPOSE"?
Sure, do good for the world, create a purpose to work on, but don’t build your identity of self around the pursuit of that purpose. Because otherwise you need the “problem that your purpose is trying to solve” to exist, in order for you to maintain your current identity of self.
Then you will inadvertently become a part of the problem, because the problem has become a part of you. You’ll subconsciously keep the problem alive in order to keep your identity of self alive, because without “it”, who are “you”?
You can dedicate yourself to a cause, but since it doesn’t mean anything anyway, always ensure that you’re truly experiencing and living your life while in the pursuit of that cause.

WHAT MAKES US FEEL GOOD?
WHAT MAKES US FEEL GOOD?
So if it’s all about the feeling, what makes us feel good? Well, humans tend to feel a sense of deep satisfaction when they’re growing and contributing to the lives of other humans.
None of us want to come to the end of our lives and die, in the knowing that we were a cancer to this world who made the lives of other human beings far worse because we existed.
So if in the grand cosmic scale there’s no meaning to what we do, but if as a human being we intend to live our lives from a rich, enlivened space of feeling incredible, and if a major factor that makes humans feel incredible is helping other humans feel incredible, then we can construct our own “meaning” and “purpose” for ourselves, built around helping other humans live enriched lives where they too feel incredible.
We can look at how we can help humans now and in the future, continue to live enriched and fulfilled lives. We can look at what difference we want to make in the world that will contribute towards making the world a better place.
What do we choose to put our time and attention into, that within the doing of; we feel great and we help others feel great too?
Although it ultimately doesn’t “mean” anything, I believe that living and experiencing your life is the “meaning” of life.
