HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE

HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE

We hear that “happiness is a choice” within a lot of personal development content and from a lot of people who talk about how to be happy, but what does that ACTUALLY mean?

Can you wake up one morning and just choose to be happy? Technically yes, but it’s often not that simple.

Knowing how to create your own happiness starts with understanding some of the thoughts and beliefs that we’re currently choosing to hold on to, which are preventing us from developing the right perspective that will create feelings of happiness in the present moment.

The fact is that our external situations, challenges, people or anything else not within us has absolutely nothing to do with our happiness. What does dictate our happiness, is how we choose to PERCEIVE everything that we experience consciously.

HERE'S A GREAT EXAMPLE

HERE'S A GREAT EXAMPLE

Have you ever got a promotion that you were absolutely over the moon about? You were so happy and so excited to step into that new role, that you couldn’t have possibly been happier.

Except, 2 years later… how did that same role feel then? What’s changed? It’s exactly the same job, so what is it that made us go from ecstatically happy about the role, to being bored out of our mind about the role?

The only thing that changed, is how we perceived it.

What we once saw as incredible, eventually we saw as boring. That’s entirely to do with us and what goes on within our own head, and nothing to do with the external situation. It never even changed, but we did.

And so to expand on this further and explore how it impacts our life in the bigger sense, a perfect example is the relationship between “projects” and “goals”.

The more that I explore happiness, the more that I feel “projects” are far more in line with BEING happy than “goals” are.

Goals are outcome oriented, goals are usually based on “having”. And as we’ve just pointed out, HAVING a great job doesn’t mean BEING happy…

Projects however are focused on “doing” rather than “having”. And being happy is more in line with doing things that make you happy. Or working on projects that make you happy.

Having does not = being happy. So achieving “having” focused goals as a means to being happy, is a never-ending losing battle.
